Lou Bates put in a wildly exciting sprint, one that rivals the top men at 10 w/kg for an entire minute. However, she was sadly far too far from the sprint line and also putting in a breakaway effort against the top riders on a flat stage where everyone had fresh legs...well it proved foolhardy and cost her the chance to contest the finishing sprint.
KM won the mini sprint and was flailing to keep up and recover after a mid-race finishing type of effort. Amazing on her part that she recovered and won stage 1 plus the showdown....legendary.
Yeah, the men too - there's just too much money in SRC right now to be sitting out those races (and to be clear, that's not a critique of the riders at all).
Last year, the women raced on Sundays for Zwift Games, and if I'm remembering correctly some did *both* SRC and Zwift Games on the same day. I don't actually know this, but I suspect Zwift moved both races to Saturday this year to avoid having to compete directly with SRC again.

That's why Bates is so much fun to watch! The progression on some of her moves is:
- "well, this doesn't seem smart..."
- "wait, she looks pretty strong, can she pull this off?"
- Then sometimes she does, and sometimes she doesn't, but either way you are rooting for her in the end 😂
McCarthy looks unbeatable right now. What she did in the Showdown was one of the more incredible things I've ever seen.
and then McCarthy, Guerra, Fuhrer, and Kulchinsky (and a few others) did a major race (Whoosh) on Sunday.
